Who we are

dilmusic is made by a group of musicians and music enthusiasts who like to share what they know. “Dil” means heart: we put the site together because we love music, and we want the basics to be open and free for anyone who wants to learn.

Everything here is free to use, with no account and no sign-up. Play the chords, print the charts, use the tuners, and share them with friends, students and bandmates.

What we make

A reference for piano and guitar that you can hear as well as read:

How we make it

The music on dilmusic is generated, then checked. Every chord, scale and key comes from one set of music data, and that data is tested against answers worked out by hand: the notes of each chord, the key signature of all thirty keys, the spelling of every scale. B♭ major is written with B♭ and E♭, never A♯ and D♯, because each scale uses each letter once.

Every diagram, keyboard, staff and fretboard is drawn by the site’s own code from that data. Nothing is traced or drawn freehand, so a chart someone prints and pins on the wall shows exactly what the tested data says.

Guitar shapes and piano fingerings are chosen by hand rather than computed, because a computer can find shapes that are correct but awkward to play.

What we publish

Original diagrams, tools and explanations, all made here. Sheet music, when we add it, will be public-domain pieces engraved from scratch. We do not publish song lyrics, recordings, or sheet music and tabs of copyrighted songs.
