F harmonic and melodic minor
Harmonic minor
F harmonic minor raises the 7th note a half step, E♭ to E♮, so the scale leads back to F.
Melodic minor
F melodic minor raises the 6th and 7th notes going up, D♭ to D♮ and E♭ to E♮, and comes back down as the natural minor.
Modes on the same notes
Start the A♭ major scale on another of its notes and you get a mode, with the same key signature: A♭ ionian, B♭ dorian, C phrygian, D♭ lydian, E♭ mixolydian, F aeolian, G locrian.
Practice notes for the F minor scale
F minor has four flats, B♭ E♭ A♭ D♭: F G A♭ B♭ C D♭ E♭ F. It is the relative minor of A♭ major. The right hand uses the F major fingering, four notes before the thumb passes under: 1 2 3 4, thumb under to C, 1 2 3 4.
Where it goes wrong. The right hand crossing too early. After the many keys that cross after finger 3, the hand wants to do it here too, and that would put the thumb on B♭. Play F G A♭ B♭ with 1 2 3 4, and cross to C. The left hand is the standard 5 4 3 2 1 from F, then 3 crosses over to D♭, and 2 1 for E♭ F.
How to practice it. Play F major and F minor back to back. The fingers are the same in the right hand; three notes change, A to A♭, D to D♭ and E to E♭. Watching which fingers move onto black keys teaches the key faster than reading the signature.
What to listen for. E♮ to F in harmonic and melodic minor, the half step up to the keynote. In harmonic minor, D♭ to E♮ is three half steps wide. Melodic minor going up raises D♭ and E♭ to D♮ and E♮, so the upper half sounds like F major.
What to learn next. A♭ major, the relative major with the same four flats, and C minor and B♭ minor, one flat fewer and one flat more.
